How Important Is Writing? How Important Is Writing?

Research shows that the amount of writing in a course correlates more strongly than anything else with student learning and that writing well leads to better career and graduate school opportunities.

Research also indicates that attain-ing stronger writing skills occurs throughout one’s college career, not just in freshman composition courses, and that writing assignments become more complex as students enter their majors.

This indicates that students must learn and master new writing skills in order to write successfully in their majors—and later in their careers.

Because of the importance of writing to both learning and success, EC faculty will explore ways of assisting students in meeting these goals.
